What is ¡Hola! Day?

This year on October 1st, thousands of bilingual Americans will be participating in a new holiday called ¡Hola! Day. This celebratory day set in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th through October 15th) is designed to foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the use of the Spanish language in the USA.
In addition, ¡Hola! Day honors the spirit of cooperation and the courage of Americans to promote better communication when they commit themselves to learning Spanish as a second language and using it in their daily lives.

¡Hola! Day is the brainchild of Myelita Melton, owner of SpeakEasy Communications, Inc., a Mooresville, NC-based Spanish training and publishing company. Melton, who speaks nationally, is a recognized expert in cultural diversity and Spanish language acquisition in adults. She is also the author of the company’s popular SpeakEasy Spanish™ series. The series of thirteen books and CDs are industry-specific, focusing on the vocabulary that professionals need on-the-job in a multicultural environment.

How Can I Participate? — Just Say ¡Hola!

Participating in ¡Hola! Day is simple. “We’re asking everyone in America to say something in Spanish to someone on October 1st,” Melton says. “What you say can be as simple as ‘adiós’ or as complicated as you wish. And, the person you speak to doesn’t have to speak Spanish—the point is that you do!”
